About the Resort

In March 1997, Paul and Patti Hansen bought seven acres of land from a German development company and established the West Coast Wilderness Lodge.
Egmont was chosen for its close proximity to Vancouver and its pristine wilderness setting; its spectacular scenery includes sites such as Chatterbox Falls, Freil Falls and the Skookumchuck Rapids, as well as several beautiful lakes.

The Hansens’ strong background in outdoor recreation and wilderness education led them to design the Lodge as a wilderness retreat which offered schoolchildren and corporate groups the opportunity to learn about and enjoy the beautiful B.C. outdoors.

A 7,000 square foot main lodge was built with a dining room, kitchen, offices, and lounge, as well as five mini-lodges with accommodation for up to eighty guests. West Coast Wilderness Lodge attracted students from many local and international schools, as well as business groups seeking a wilderness corporate retreat.

As Paul and Patti began considering their goals and plans for the Lodge’s future, they identified that the Lodge was well-positioned for the international eco-tourism market. Boutique remote resorts have become a highly sought-after destination by overseas tourists. The Lodge’s close proximity to the Lower Mainland meant it was perfect for corporate retreats, weddings and weekend getaways.

In 2003 the property was re-zoned, existing facilities were remodeled and additional services were added. These include an improved restaurant, front desk, a concierge, and an Adventure Centre that caters to in-house guests and other visitors to the area.

This allowed the Lodge to open up to both international and domestic travelers. As the rooms were enlarged and upgraded into luxury accommodations, occupancy was lowered from 80 to approximately 40 guests.

In 2006 and 2007, the accommodations were remodeled once again with larger bathrooms and the addition of a private balcony for each room. Due to these upgrades, the resort ended 2008 with over 160 international tour providers as partners.

Our fine dining room was recently called “the best waterfront restaurant dining room in this part of the world” by Pacific Yachting Magazine.
As our business depends on Egmont maintaining its environmental beauty and integrity, West Coast Wilderness Lodge is deeply committed to minimizing our impact on the local wilderness and wildlife of the Sunshine Coast.

For example, landscaping is primarily done with indigenous species of trees, shrubs, and plants, with special emphasis on foreshore flora and fauna. The resort will remain a west coast wilderness area that blends in with the natural rock features that flow throughout the property.

Eco-tourism adventures are our niche and we try to help the Sunshine Coast’s economy grow in a sustainable fashion. We have been operating in Egmont for the past twenty years; our resort’s impact on the community has been very positive so far and it will continue to be.

We got married at the lodge on a weekday this summer (3 nights elopement package) with 9 guests with us and overall we had an amazing experience. Leading up to the event, I was in communication with Madeleine who is the event coordinator and Randi at reception for more general inquiries. Responses via email were a bit slow at times but I guess my questions weren’t that urgent and in the end, they were very accommodating of all requests. As everyone says, the lodge itself is beautiful and the views are WOW. Rooms were nice, especially ours (Ocean view suite) that felt very romantic. On the wedding day, things went very smoothly to say the least. There was a risk of rain and Madeleine had different options for us as we were having an outdoor ceremony. We had brought some decoration for the arch and Madeleine dealt with it so it was very worry-free for us. I had sent specific requests for the bouquet I wanted (included in the package) and the result was really pretty and up to expectations as well as the boutonniere. The weather cleared out and we got married on the main deck which has probably one of the most beautiful backgrounds you can get for a wedding ceremony. When it was over, the staff was ready with glasses of champagne for everyone. My husband and I left with the photographer while our guests enjoyed cocktails on the deck. Lots of great spots around for photos. The wedding dinner table was beautifully decorated, on a covered private deck with beautiful views, it felt magical. Everybody enjoyed the food and wine, and service was on point. On the following days my husband and I enjoyed a sunset kayaking tour and jetski (all included in the package) and it was perfect, we had such a great time. Overall we were very happy with our experience at the lodge, the whole staff took good care of us and made us feel special on such an important day. It was an expensive journey for sure but we felt it was worth it. There are many wedding happening at the lodge and you can tell, they know what they are doing. They also work regularly with the same vendors (Hair&make up, photographer...) so everything runs very smoothly. A couple of things regarding the tips though : 1) Even if you take a room package with meals included, you are expected to pay a tip on top of it. After the first breakfast, our guests were brought the bill and asked for a tip even though we wanted to pay for everything for them. We weren’t there (breakfast in our bedroom) but apparently it was quite an awkward moment for them. 2) When my husband and I had breakfast/dinner together the day after our wedding, we were asked for a tip as well, even though we had already paid 18% gratuity on our elopement package (that includes breakfast and dinner). We brought this up with our waitress, but she didn’t seem to be aware of this side of things. We paid the tips. At the time of check out we discussed this with Madeleine and it was deducted from our final bill but we felt this could have been handled better, by making the waiting staff aware of this aspect.

Had a corporate retreat on-site recently. The staff was amazing....shout out to Maddy - the event coordinator, Luke and Paul - owners/tour operators, Randi - reception/reservations, Brian- the bartender, Effie - Chef, Katherine and Amelia and so many other staff who were amazing and made our event such a success. The views went on for days! Can't beat waking up to the ocean! So peaceful and relaxing. They have plenty of activities on site. Kayaking, boat tours to Princess Louisa Inlet, seal colony out front on a rock shelf, beach games, etc. The views of the mountains all around were so beautiful. We had some rain while there and the clouds and fog mixed in the trees and mountains so it was breathtaking. Definitely recommend this venue for a weekend getaway or a wedding or a corporate retreat. It won't disappoint. Side note: they are in the process of expanding adding a lot more rooms and a reception-type hall area.

We didn’t stay at the lodge as the prices are astronomical compared to the Back Eddy Resort and Marina next door but we did go for dinner. The view was beautiful but the food was not worth the money. $300 for two with NO ALCOHOL! That’s alright if the food is great but it wasn’t.

Amazing view and awesome staff. Other than that, we were a bit disappointed. We booked based on photo of suite and wanted a hot tub...note, the other suite didn't show hot tub or no reference that hot tub was limited. But when we arrived, we were told no hot tub available and that we should had booked it. What! We would had booked a cheaper suite without hot tub. Looking at the lodge, it looks amazing, but looking at the detail shows cheap material and workmanship. The wood used was rough with nails have sticking out and gaps everywhere. It felt like it was a rush job. Driving an EV, and labeling themselves as a wilderness excursion, I would think they would had some kind of charger, but no. We had to walk half of kilometer to get to a charger. There is now a supercharger several kilometers away. OK for Tesla driver, not for others. Also note, we stayed there a couple of years ago, but the experience left a bad taste. We want to go to the same area this year and started looking for a place to stay, but when I saw this lodge, I felt I had to write this review...still feel angry staying here.

Once you’ve arrived, this spot is pretty magical! The views from the restaurant are some of the best I've seen - gorgeous and serene. Our waitress was the queen - handling all of our requests efficiently and sweetly and she was the only one serving all of the tables -about 10 total tables occupied tonight.) We've never stayed here, so cannot comment on the rooms, but the food - superb! Check ahead as the menu is limited & does change.
